Well, we have good news, we’re going to take a trip to the movies. You’ll learn the vocabulary for one of the most popular pastimes and conversation topics. Let’s get the film rolling...


At the Cinema

diànyǐng - 电影– Film/Movies

diànyǐngyuàn - 电影院- Cinema

mǎi diànyǐng piào - 买电影票– Buy cinema tickets

qǔ piào - 取票– Collect ticket

mǎi bào mǐhuā - 买爆米花– Buy popcorn

mǎi yǐnliào/ mǎi hē de dōngxi/ mǎi kělè - 买饮料/ 买喝的东西/ 买可乐- Buy a drink / buy something to drink / buy coke

ná 3D yǎnjìng- 3D眼镜– Take 3D glasses


nǐ xiǎng kàn shénme diànyǐng? - 你想看什么电影?- What movie do you want to watch?

nǐ xǐhuan shénme diànyǐng? - 你喜欢什么电影?- What movies do you like?


Types of Films

ɡùshi piàn - 故事片- Feature film


dòngzuò piàn - 动作片– Action (e.g. James Bond)

jùqíng piàn - 剧情片– Drama (e.g. Brokeback Mountain)

xǐjù piàn - 喜剧片– Comedy (e.g. Anchorman)

àiqínɡ piàn - 爱情片– Romance (e.g Titanic)

* Rom-com is àiqíng xǐjù piàn - 爱情喜剧片(e.g. When Harry Met Sally)

kǒngbù piàn - 恐怖片– Horror (e.g. The Shining)

dònghuà piàn - 动画片– Animation (e.g. Toy Story)


*piàn also means movies and when orally speaking is commonly used to express film genres. However you cannot say wǒ xiǎng kàn piàn, here you would need to use diànyǐng.


jīngsǒng piàn - 惊悚片– Thriller (e.g. The Fugitive)

zāinàn piàn - 灾难片– Disaster (e.g. The Towering Inferno)

xuányí piàn - 悬疑片)– Mystery/Suspense (e.g.Pick any Alfred Hitchock film, Vertigo)

jǐnɡfěi piàn - 警匪片– Police/crime (Have you ever seen Jackie Chan in Police Story?)

lìshǐ piàn - 历史片– Historical (e.g. Lincoln)

màoxiǎn piàn  - 冒险片– Adventure (e.g. Indiana Jones)

kēhuàn piàn - 科幻片– Sci-Fi  (e.g. Star Wars would suit but also something like Blade Runner)

qíhuàn piàn - 奇幻片– Fantasy

*Fantasy in China is used broadly and commonly to describe movies such as Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings and also superhero movies such as the Avengers, anything with scale and is fantastic.

zhànzhēng piàn - 战争片– War (e.g. Saving Private Ryan)

xībù piàn - 西部片– Western (e.g. The Searchers)

tǐyù piàn - 体育片– Sports  (e.g. Rocky)

ɡēwǔ piàn- 歌舞片– Musical (e.g. West Side Story)

gōngfū piàn - 功夫片– Kung-fu (Who doesn’t love a bit of Bruce Lee?)

wàiyǔ piàn - 外语片– Foreign Language Film

zhuànjì piàn - 传记片– Biographical Film (e.g. The Theory of Everything)

jìlùpiàn - 纪录片– Documentary (e.g. Man on Wire)


For the cineastes

shāngyè diànyǐng  - 商业电影– Commercial

dúlì diànyǐng - 独立电影 – Independent

Shíyàn piàn - 实验片Experimental

Yìshù piàn - 艺术片– Art Film

Mò piàn / mò jù - 默片/ 默剧– Silent film

wényìpiàn - 文艺片– Literary film (e.g. films related to Jane Austen or Shakespare – Romeo and Juliet)
