Vocabulary Curriculum: This is a foundational course suited for beginners and puts emphasis on developing the pronunciation, sounds, speaking and listening of Mandarin. It uses our very own textbook ‘My Friend Lily’ as we follow 9-year old Lily through her daily life. Lessons will focus on a particular topic related to daily routine e.g. home, school etc and each session will feature 5/6 keywords and a key sentence pattern, taking you from beginner to elementary. A great and easy way for a child to begin learning Mandarin.
Standard Course Curriculum: A more academic way of learning Mandarin for young learners, this is a more structured course that focus on all aspects of Mandarin from reading, speaking, listening and writing, featuring grammar and functions plus character recognition and building exercises. Each session is designed with 4 parts, learning key words and grammars, reading/comprehension with those newly learnt terms, practice using those terms, and a test/review.
Conversation Curriculum: For young learners who have an already solid foundation in Mandarin Chinese, our topical conversation course is suited for high elementary learners and intermediates to take their speaking to the next level. Each session has a theme plus related vocabulary e.g. food, travel, films etc and is designed to improve the fluency of participants, encouraging them to speak more and express their own thoughts, ideas and feelings in Mandarin. Getting you to think in Mandarin will help you improve much more quickly.
Storybook Curriculum: As you can tell our Storybook curriculum is for young learners who are high intermediates or more advanced and features longer and more complex texts and paragraphs using characters and vocabulary you should already know. After the first few stages minimal or no pinyin is used on this course. This is Mandarin learning through stories and comprehension that will help you gain a better and deeper understanding of the language and the culture.
How do we assess your child?
Our criteria and academic standards are based on the Youth Chinese Test (YCT), the standardised system for measuring the Chinese level of foreign young learners in China, and also the Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi (HSK), the official standard Chinese proficiency level for non-native speakers. We have divided 10 levels which encompass all our young learners curriculums, you can see that below.
You will have a strong grasp of basic Chinese vocabulary, phrases and sentences, and can start to use these for basic daily communication and in dialogue exchanges on familiar topics learnt.
You will be able to understand popular and standard words and sentences in different scenarios and be able to give simple instructions and requirements, and express simple needs. You can conduct very basic Chinese conversations.
You’re able to participate well in simple Chinese conversations in daily life and handle a good range of communicative tasks, communicating clearly in detail and with accurate descriptions.
A mastery of basic Chinese means you can now involve yourself in Chinese conversations with ease, grasp the key points, convey your own thoughts, ideas and opinions. You can comprehend longer and more complicated texts.
